Complete guide to uploading and managing your files

1. Overview

Legacy provides secure, encrypted storage for your important files. This guide covers everything you need to know about uploading, managing, and organizing your files.

2. Supported File Types

Legacy supports a wide range of file formats:

⚠️ Restricted Files:

Executable files (.exe, .dmg, .app) and system files are not allowed for security reasons.

3. File Size Limits

File size limits depend on your subscription plan:

4. Upload Process

Follow these steps to upload a file:

Navigate to Upload Page

Click "Upload Files" from home page or dashboard

Choose Upload Method

  • • Drag and drop files into the upload area
  • • Click "Browse" to select files from your device

File Validation

System checks file type and size automatically

Add Details

Fill in title, message, expiry period (see next section)

Add Beneficiaries

Enter email addresses of designated beneficiaries

Upload & Encrypt

Click "Upload File" - progress bar shows upload status

Complete

File is encrypted and stored securely. Beneficiaries are notified.

5. Adding File Details

Each uploaded file requires specific details:

File Title (Required)

Give your file a descriptive name that beneficiaries will see.

Example: "Smith Family Will - Updated 2024"

Message to Beneficiaries (Optional)

Add a personal message explaining the file's importance.

Example: "This contains important legal documents. Please keep them safe."

Expiry Period (Required)

Choose how long to store the file:

  • Free: 1 month only
  • Basic: 1, 3, or 6 months
  • Premium: 1, 3, 6, 12 months, or Lifetime

6. Managing Files

View and manage all your files from the Dashboard:

File Information Displayed:

File name and title
File size
Upload date
Expiry date

Available Actions:

  • View file details and metadata
  • Edit file information
  • Add or remove beneficiaries
  • Extend expiry period
  • Download your own files
  • Delete files permanently

7. Editing Files

You can edit file details after upload:

Editable Information:

  • ✓ File title
  • ✓ Message to beneficiaries
  • ✓ Beneficiary list (add/remove)
  • ✓ Expiry period (extend only)

⚠️ Cannot Edit:

The actual file content cannot be edited. To update a file, delete the old one and upload a new version.

8. Deleting Files

To permanently delete a file:

  1. Go to your Dashboard
  2. Find the file you want to delete
  3. Click the "Delete" or trash icon
  4. Confirm deletion in the popup

⚠️ Warning: Permanent Action

  • • Deleted files cannot be recovered
  • • Beneficiaries will lose access immediately
  • • All associated data is removed
  • • Consider downloading a backup first

9. File Expiry & Renewal

Files are automatically deleted when they expire. Here's how it works:

Expiry Notifications:

  • 30 days before expiry
  • 7 days before expiry
  • 1 day before expiry
  • On expiry date

Extending Expiry:

You can extend the expiry period at any time before it expires. Go to Dashboard → Select file → Edit → Choose new expiry period.

💡 Pro Tip:

Premium users can set files to "Lifetime" storage - they never expire unless you manually delete them.
